Solar Suitability

The Solar Suitability project was designed to produce a visualization of the suitability of bare earth and Virginia Tech campus buildings roofs for the potential installation of solar power accumulators. The application displays output from the ESRI Solar Radiation Analyst tool contained in ArcToolbox.

The application showcases average daily radiation values for roofs, parking lots, and lawns, as well as a solar aspect map.

Initial development was done as part of the Geography 4984/5984 Web Mapping class in Spring 2011. Student members included Tim Jordan (Department of Entomology), Jaixuan Chai (Department of Geography), and Isaac Jones (Department of Geography). Peter Sforza instructed the class and technical assistance and instruction were shared by VTGIS staff members Thomas Dickerson, Seth Peery, and Jarrod Rife.
